(June 2010)

What does the Nominations Committee do?
The Nominations Committee develops slates of candidates for ASCD's General Membership and Leadership Council elections. It forms right after Annual Conference. Members meet at ASCD headquarters for a two-day training session in the fall (attendance is mandatory for both committee members and any alternates). They meet again for three days, beginning the Thursday before Annual Conference, to develop a slate of candidates for ASCD's General Membership and Leadership Council elections, and usually attend the "Meet the President-Elect" Candidates Forum the Sunday of Annual Conference.

Who serves on the committee and how do you get there?
The Nominations Committee consists of at least 12 members appointed by the Board of Directors.
The President appoints a committee of Board of Directors members to recommend 8 diverse, qualified candidates and 3 alternates for the Nominations Committee. Candidates are selected from a pool nominated by the Leadership Council by mail (January) and augmented as necessary to ensure quantity, quality, and diversity. The eight-member slate is then appointed by the Board of Directors at its meeting at Annual Conference. The President-Elect appoints four carryover members, including the chair and the vice-chair, for a total of 12 members. The Immediate Past President serves as a liaison to the committee.
Qualifications for office include
- Membership in ASCD;
- A minimum of three years of service in a leadership role (past membership on the Board of Directors, current or past membership on the Leadership Council, affiliate executive director, graduate of the Emerging Leaders program, professional interest community facilitator, president of a connected community, etc.);
- Commitment to attend committee meetings before and during a portion of Annual Conference, and
- Interest in selecting highly qualified slates of members for office.
Committee members may serve more than one term.
