Synopsis

Instead of a classroom culture built around obedience, teachers working with the dignity model guide students toward ownership of their learning environment and responsibility for their actions. The authors explain how to encourage responsible behavior and establish fair consequences for misbehavior, while taking into account individual student needs. They even model positive interactions for when the problem behavior isn't coming from a student—when it's a parent or guardian that's taxing your patience.

This interview was conducted by ASCD project manager and staff writer Laura Varlas.
