About This Book
The Building Academic Vocabulary Student Notebook contains preprinted templates that students can use to record vocabulary terms, as outlined in the Building Academic Vocabulary Teacher's Manual by Robert J. Marzano and Debra Pickering.
The notebook enables teachers to more easily take students through a research-based instructional approach, with the option of assigning each of the five color-coded sections of the notebook to a different subject area. Throughout the year, students can add new information as their understanding of the terms deepens and matures. This quality paperback is predrilled for optional insertion into the student's own 3-ring binder.
The revised edition of the Building Academic Vocabulary Student Notebook differs from the 1st edition in several ways:
More Durable Format: The format has changed from loose-leaf pages to a bound paperback book, drilled with holes for optional insertion in the student's own 3-ring binder (limited quantities of ASCD's Three-Ring Binder for Building Academic Vocabulary: Student Notebook are still available for $4 each). This format is less likely to be damaged during shipping and use than the loose-leaf pages.
More Spaces for Vocabulary Terms: The number of spaces available for vocabulary terms has increased from 256 to 312 so that students can explore more terms.
No List of Vocabulary Terms: The preset list of vocabulary terms has been eliminated, so teachers and students can decide what terms to focus on.
Lower Price: The list price has been reduced from $9.79 per notebook to $7.95 per notebook. Discounts for bulk purchases are available (contact ASCD sales staff).
Flexible Quantities: The 1st edition was available only as a set of 5 notebooks (for $48.95); the revised edition is sold as a single notebook.
These changes were made in response to comments from the field about the accessibility of the manual and how teachers actually use it in the classroom.

About the Author
ROBERT J. MARZANO is a senior scholar at Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning in Aurora, Colo.; an associate professor at Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee, Wis.; vice president of Pathfinder Education, Inc.; and president of Marzano & Associates consulting firm in Centennial, Colo. He has developed programs and practices used in K–12 classrooms that translate current research and theory in cognition into instructional methods.
DEBRA J. PICKERING is a private consultant and director of staff development in Littleton Public Schools, Littleton, Colo. During more than 25 years in education, she has gained practical experience as a classroom teacher and district staff development coordinator and has done extensive consulting with administrators and teachers, K–12. Her work in research and development centers on the study of learning and the development of curriculum, instruction, and assessment that addresses clearly identified learning goals.
