In addition to addressing the needs of older students, these strategies can be used to help teach English language learners the rudiments of reading in English. KAREN TANKERSLEY recently left the public school system after five years as assistant superintendent for educational services in a rapidly growing Phoenix-area school district. She now provides staff development and consultation to school districts around the world. Originally a linguist with a B.A. in French and a minor in German and English, she has an extensive background in language and language acquisition issues.
