David Krulwich is principal of the Urban Assembly School for Applied Math and Science (AMS) in the Bronx, New York. At AMS, he leads a highly successful, non-screened, public school serving over 600 students in grades 6–12 in one of the lowest-income communities in the United States. The school has a historical graduation rate of 90 percent, the vast majority of whom continue on to college after graduation.
Krulwich began his career as a litigation attorney at a law firm in New York City. In 2001, he became a 7th grade mathematics teacher at a public middle school in the South Bronx. In 2005, he joined AMS, and became principal in 2012. Krulwich graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in history, earned a JD from Columbia University Law School, and earned master's degrees at the City College of New York (MEd, secondary mathematics) and Bank Street College (MEd, school leadership).
Intensive collaboration among teachers helps develop the broad range of skills they need to become true artisans who know how to help every student achieve.
