Walter McKenzie is the Senior Director of Constituent Services at ASCD, facilitating its many educator communities, including state, regional, provincial, and international affiliates and connected communities. As director, he also supports ASCD governance, education policy, global engagement, and the whole child. He is a strong proponent of using social media technologies to transform organizations as they strive to meet the needs of their members in the 21st century.
Prior to coming to ASCD, McKenzie served 25 years in Massachusetts and Virginia public schools: 14 years as a classroom teacher and 11 years as a district director and assistant superintendent. He also served as a senior training specialist for the Department of Housing and Urban Development in Washington, D.C., and its field offices around the nation.
In addition to his work in public schools, McKenzie is an internationally known presenter on multiple intelligences theory and instructional technology, and he has authored several books on these subjects. He has been instrumental in launching and leading online professional development programs and postgraduate professional education courses around the country, and he has actively facilitated online educator communities and web-based interdisciplinary instructional projects over the past 20 years.
McKenzie served as director of communications for the Massachusetts Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development from 2005 to 2007, and as president of Massachusetts Computer Using Educators. He has participated in the Annenberg Project's The Arts in Every Classroom project and the Kennedy Center's Changing Education Through the Arts program, and he is an advocate for reaching and teaching the whole child to ensure success for every student.
He holds a bachelor's degree in early and middle childhood education from The Ohio State University and a master's degree in curriculum and instruction with an emphasis on instructional technology from George Mason University.
