Theresa Lewallen

As managing director of Constituent Programs, Lewallen leads the group responsible for constituent programs, including affiliates, connected communities, Emerging Leaders, networks, and student chapters, as well as partnerships and alliances. Lewallen's focus at ASCD has been on tying together research, policy, and practice and developing strategic initiatives that demonstrate those critical links.

Lewallen's tenure at ASCD began in 1999 when she was directing a project funded by The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation that linked schools with local public health agencies. The outcome of that work was published in Education and Public Health: Natural Partners in Learning for Life. Immediately prior to assuming the managing director role, Lewallen served as the director of ASCD's Healthy School Communities, overseeing the research and evaluation component of that work. She oversaw the research, development, and production of Creating A Healthy School Using the Healthy School Report Card: An ASCD Action Tool, released in January 2006, and ASCD's first customized product Creating a Healthy School Using the Healthy School Report Card: An ASCD Action Tool—Canadian Edition, released in January 2007.

Lewallen played an instrumental role in the development of ASCD's whole child efforts. She has authored or coauthored policy papers and journal articles, presented at national and international conferences, and continues to serves as a content expert and referral source for ASCD. Lewallen has participated on numerous ASCD teams and co-chaired strategic plan development and measurement teams.

Lewallen represents ASCD on national and international committees, primarily those that focus on improving outcomes for students through research, policy, and practice. She has interacted with state, provincial, and national governments, making the case for using evidence to inform policy development and implementation.

Lewallen has a Master of Arts degree in community health promotion and education from Trinity University in Washington, D.C., and is a certified health education specialist (CHES). Prior to coming to ASCD, she provided technical support to the Office of the Secretary of U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office on Women's Health. She also served the City of Alexandria, Va., for seven years as a community health educator developing and presenting programs through the schools and in the community.
