Hiring and Supporting Great Teachers at YES Prep

 

 

At YES Prep, a 6–12 grade school in Houston, Tex., new hires are screened for seven desirable traits, like willingness to collaborate with colleagues, that connect back to the school's overall teaching and learning philosophies. Once the new hires are on board, these traits are not only encouraged but also supported through

  • A full-time dean of instruction, who targets professional development and feedback to individual teacher needs.
  • Nearly two hours a day for common planning.
  • Weekly whole-staff professional development.
  • Weekly shout-outs, or peer-to-peer recognition of colleagues.
