Reasoning Shaped Through Discourse

Two video segments show 3rd graders in a math class of then-elementary teacher Deborah Ball (Ball is now dean of the University of Michigan's School of Education).

  • In the first video, the students are engaged in deep discourse about what makes a number even or odd.
  • In the second video, the class works through a set of conjectures about the properties of even and odd numbers.
