Every Day in Every Classroom
Formative assessments help students incrementally build understanding and track their progress toward learning targets. Teacher Laura Greenstein describes an array of formative assessment strategies she employs before, during, and after instruction to constantly refine how she differentiates her approach to each learner.
For example, before instruction, strategies like entrance slips, galleries, or signaling help introduce a lesson and give the teacher feedback about what students already know about the topic. During instruction strategies like sorting and matching questions with their correct answers, filling in a graphic organizer, or pausing to identify persistent areas of confusion provide both student and teacher a valuable check-in on how the student is progressing toward learning goals. Teacher and student may need to make adjustments, and these formative assessments identify where to focus those efforts. After instruction (but before a summative test), students might take a practice test, write summaries about what they've learned, or in some other way practice synthesizing and applying the new information. These low-stakes trial runs help students and teachers become aware of lingering sticking points.
