Beyond Boundaries: Talking Web 2.0 Tools with Bill Sheskey
In this interview, an instructional technology specialist shares the simple, accessible, and largely free Web 2.0 tools that teachers are using to expand students' digital literacy and connect them to meaningful, project-based curricula.
Sheskey's students take advantage of Web 2.0 tools by designing artwork with digital imaging software and then using their pictures as story prompts. They record their stories in writing and orally and then share them with the class using multimedia presentation tools.
Web 2.0 tools also have analytic functions, including graphing and mapping data, measuring the angles in an image, and labeling items in a science lab. Students might demonstrate their learning by developing a presentation that tells the story of how they solved a math problem, which allows teachers to evaluate every step of the learning process. The Web 2.0 tools Sheskey discusses are easy to use, encourage teacher and student innovation, and help teachers generate data on student learning.
