Zak Cohen, or Dr. Z, as his students affectionately call him, has served in nearly every role within a middle school—from English and social studies teacher to debate coach, grade-level leader, activities director, department chair, and principal. He has worked in independent and international schools across North America, Asia, and Africa.

Dr. Z earned his BA in government from Hamilton College, his MA in education from Lesley University, and his doctorate in education from Drexel University. Recognized for his leadership in education, he was named an ASCD Emerging Leader in 2020. He is the author of Wise Freedom and dozens of articles on middle school culture, student agency, and artificial intelligence.
