Conference Daily Quick Links

This year, we're taking whole child advocacy to the next level and creating a designated area with resources, workshops, and space to collaborate with like-minded leaders working to ensure that each child is healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged.

You'll want to stop by Whole Child Central—located in the West Registration area adjacent to the hall for general sessions—between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, for these exciting events. Whole Child Central is sponsored by CTB/McGraw-Hill.

Saturday, March 6

  • 9:00 a.m.—Join Bruce Taylor and Sandra Bernhard from the Washington National Opera and the Houston Grand Opera to discuss how the arts play a critical role in a whole child approach to education.
  • 9:45 a.m.—Fran Meyer of the National Dance Association continues the conversation on how vital the arts are in the education of the whole child.
  • 12:00 p.m.—Meet with Geoffrey Canada, president and CEO of the Harlem Children's Zone, after his general session.
  • 12:30 pm.—Denise Wolk and Carol Liber from Educators for Social Responsibility.
  • 2:00 p.m.—Whole Child Action Hour with petition signing and advocacy action with David Griffith, ASCD Director of Public Policy, and New York ASCD.
  • 3:30 p.m.—Jacqueline Newton from Iroquois Ridge High School.
  • 4:00 p.m.—Stephanie Nixon and Jamie Buffington from T. C. Howe Community High School.
  • 4:30 p.m.—Ted McConnell from Campaign for the Civic Mission of Schools.

Sunday, March 7

  • 9:00 a.m.—Sam Chaltain from Forum for Education and Democracy.
  • 9:30 a.m.—Bridget Fortner from CTB.
  • 11:30 a.m.—Eric Schaps and Ginger Cook from Developmental Studies Center.
  • 12:30 p.m.—Join us for a conference proposal writing workshop, and get a head start on your whole child proposal for next year's conference.
  • 1:30 p.m.—Participate in the live recording of the Whole Child Podcast, featuring the winning school of Vision in Action: The ASCD Whole Child Award.
  • 3:15 p.m.—Sarah Krongard from Massachusetts ASCD.
  • 3:45 p.m.—Sarah Pearson from Coalition for Community Schools.

Visit Whole Child Central any time to sign the Whole Child Petition, pick up free resources, explore www.wholechildeducation.org, tape video testimonials, and meet with other attendees. Best of all, you'll find a comfortable space to network with conference attendees from across the world who share your commitment to children and transforming the global conversation about education.

From building awareness to planning for engagement to taking action to improve your school and community, Whole Child Central is your creative space for moving vision to action.

Vision in Action: The ASCD Whole Child Award

ASCD will also be introducing Vision in Action: The ASCD Whole Child Award, another first at this year's conference. The new award, designed to recognize schools that have implemented a successful whole child framework, will be presented on Sunday, March 7, at ASCD's Leadership Appreciation Luncheon. The winning school will be a featured guest on the live taping of the podcast in Whole Child Central.
