Requirement to Exhibit Policy for Presenters
If you or your organization sells programs, products, or services (including independent or freelance consulting services), you may be required to purchase space in the Exhibit Hall. This policy is consistent with our understanding of what participants expect when they attend Annual Conference—namely that they are not confronted with commercialism and sales pitches, however subtle, in concurrent sessions they choose to attend.
The Requirement to Exhibit criteria are outlined below. Proposals are categorized into four overall types: commercial, consultants, commercial with a collaborative or collegial relationship with ASCD, and noncommercial.
Commercial
Primary or secondary presenters whose affiliations correspond to one or more of the following criteria qualify as commercial and may be required to exhibit:
-
The person or company operates on a for-profit basis.
-
The person or company has something to sell (even if nonprofit), including programs, products, or services (includes consultant services).
-
The person or company competes with ASCD in offering educational programs, products, and services.
-
The person or company does not contribute to the development of ASCD programs, products, and services.
-
The person or company has no existing comarketing relationship with ASCD.
Consultants
Consultants are individuals who offer professional development training for profit, regardless of the extent of their business or fame.
Consultants may be required to exhibit if any of the following criteria apply:
-
They operate on a for-profit basis.
-
They are an incorporated business or are trademarked.
-
They present proprietary material that is not available in the public domain.
Consultants may not have to exhibit if any of these criteria apply:
-
They present information that is available in the public domain and that is not copyrighted.
-
They are invited by ASCD to contribute to the development of programs, products, or services (this does not include being invited to participate in our Annual Conference program through the proposal-rating process).
-
They present material that is represented by one or more ASCD products (e.g., a book, video, or audio recording).
-
They meet criteria for which ASCD staff makes an exception: name recognition, timely and important message, or the fact that the presenter would not normally attend an ASCD conference (e.g., general session speakers, distinguished lecturers, or special feature speakers).
Collaborative or Collegial Relationship
Primary or secondary presenters whose affiliations meet one or more of the following criteria qualify as having a collaborative or collegial relationship with ASCD. The requirement to exhibit is determined by ASCD staff.
-
The person or company has a joint agreement with ASCD to develop programs, products, or services.
-
The person or company plays a corresponding leadership role in education.
-
The person or company noncompetitively advances the same goals and values as ASCD.
-
The presenter is affiliated with one of the following members of the Learning First Alliance: AACTE, AASA, AFT, CCSSO, ECS, NAESP, NASBE, NASSP, National PTA, NEA, NSBA.
-
The presentation represents cutting-edge research or advancement of current thinking.
Noncommercial
Primary or secondary presenters who meet the following criteria qualify as noncommercial and are not required to exhibit:
