Research Proposal Overview

 Action Research Proposals

 Education Policy/Impact Evaluation Studies Proposals

 Juried/Peer-Reviewed Proposals

 Action Research Proposals

Action research bridges the gap between research and teaching by providing a new model for professional practice. In action research, teachers engage in systemic inquiry to answer specific questions about student learning, instructional strategies, social dynamics, or an array of other classroom-centered issues.

Two primary characteristics of action research separate it from traditional lines of educational research:

  1. It is conducted by active participants in the teaching/learning process.

  2. It is expressed in the language of its practitioners.

Action research elevates teaching to a scholarly activity by providing a paradigm for documenting teacher efforts to improve classes, as well as communicating successes and failures to peers. ASCD is interested in session proposals for its 2010 Annual Conference concerning critiques, debates, and examples of action research that defines and characterizes the field of educational research. The sessions may address but are not limited to issues such as

  • What are the various theoretical paradigms and research approaches concerning action research?

  • What are some of the major obstacles to conducting action research within the classroom?

  • How can action research in a classroom assist in the development of educational policy for a whole school/district?

ASCD welcomes proposals that address these and other issues centered on action research.

 Education Policy/Impact Evaluation Studies Proposals

As the integration of research and practice becomes more apparent, ASCD seeks to promote educational practice and policy that is grounded in strong research and evaluation methods.

ASCD requests research and evaluation proposals that assess the impact of a variety of educational programs, including

  • Improvement efforts for traditionally underrepresented students;

  • Models for education reform; and

  • Initiatives aimed at raising the quality of teachers and maximizing the usefulness of research and evaluation efforts.

ASCD encourages submissions of completed research or in-progress projects with sufficient data to highlight anticipated conclusions. ASCD welcomes submissions that address, but are not limited to

  • Pre-K–16 education in international contexts.

  • Perspectives of disciplines that may not be traditionally associated with educational research.

  • High-quality educational research that informs efforts to improve outcomes for all students.

 Juried/Peer-Reviewed Proposals

ASCD is seeking proposals that have been vetted in the last 9 months. The topic of the research should be educational leadership. Guided by the conference theme, a special five-member commission will select the proposals to be presented at the 2010 Annual Conference.

The commissioners will consider the following when making their selection:

  • The most significant research

  • The most relevant and rigorous research

  • The research that will most impact policy and practice

The author(s) of a selected proposal will conduct a session at the 2010 ASCD Annual Conference. The author(s) will explain the original research, as well as the implications of the research (i.e., how will the research affect practice?). A person who lives in both the research and the practice worlds will respond.

Juried/peer-reviewed proposals may only be submitted at the invitation of the ASCD Research Review Commission. Submission instructions will be included in the commission's invitation.
