LILA is the Leadership Institute for Legislative Advocacy, ASCD's premier conference for educators who are interested in policy and advocacy. LILA provides an opportunity to hear from policy experts and ASCD leaders, who will share the latest federal education policy news, and participate in interactive skill-building sessions that will help you translate your firsthand experiences as an educator into compelling examples and stories that influence decision making.

LILA attendees come from a variety of professional roles, from superintendents to central office administrators to school building leaders to classroom teachers. The range of policy expertise and advocacy experience is similarly broad, from those with no advocacy experience to veteran advocates. No matter your level of experience, LILA will help increase your education policy knowledge, build your advocacy and influence skills, give you the opportunity to practice these skills, and provide time to meet and network with like-minded educators.
LILA will be held January 22–24, 2017, at the Key Bridge Marriott in Rosslyn, Virginia. It will begin on the afternoon of Sunday, January 22 (on-site check-in opens at 2:30 p.m.), and the first session is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
The conference will conclude on the afternoon of Tuesday, January 24, after your last Capitol Hill meeting. View the full conference agenda. Attendees are strongly encouraged to fly in and out of Reagan National Airport, which is only five miles from the hotel.
Registration is easy and completely online. Learn more and register.
Sign up to become an ASCD Educator Advocate, access ASCD's policy resources, become familiar with your federal policymakers, and be sure to check your e-mail for additional LILA information.
For LILA sessions in the hotel, business casual attire is appropriate. It may be chilly in some of the rooms, so be sure to bring an extra sweater, jacket, or shawl.
For your Capitol Hill meetings, business professional attire should be worn: men should wear suits and ties, and women should wear suits or dresses. Please be sure to wear comfortable shoes, as there will be a lot of walking on marble floors and concrete sidewalks. The average temperature in Washington, D.C., in January is 45 degrees.
The meetings with your elected representatives are an integral component of LILA. They allow you to apply the content knowledge and advocacy skills you learned during the conference and position you as an education expert with your federal policymakers. ASCD's Government Relations team will schedule your meetings for you and provide you with your meeting schedule when you arrive on Sunday afternoon. Please e-mail us with questions or concerns.
ASCD's Government Relations team will do its best to schedule your meetings to accommodate your travel, but we recommend scheduling your return flight in the late afternoon or early evening on January 24, if possible, to accommodate afternoon Capitol Hill meetings. It you have to leave earlier, please let us know so that we can try to schedule your meetings as early in the afternoon as possible.
You will be provided with breakfast in the hotel on Monday and Tuesday, lunch in the hotel on Monday, and lunch on Capitol Hill on Tuesday. The Sunday evening reception will include an array of hors d'oeuvres. You will be on your own for dinner on Monday evening and you will be provided with a list of restaurants near the hotel both in Rosslyn and across the river in Georgetown.
