Making a Difference: Revolutionizing the Way We Plan and Evaluate Professional Development
October 25, 2012 | Atlanta, Ga.

Accountability in professional development means that educators must show their professional learning experiences lead to better instructional practice and improved student learning. But how can leaders make sure that new forms of job-embedded, school-based professional learning make a difference in teachers' practices and students' performance? Through a variety of learning activities, participants will explore factors that contribute to the effectiveness of professional development. They will learn how to identify reliable indicators of success as part of professional development planning, apply research findings to professional development design and implementation, gather quantitative and qualitative evidence on effects, and present that evidence in meaningful and convincing ways. They will take away new ideas and strategies for improving professional development processes and evaluating the results of those experiences. Participants will
- Develop specific skills in planning effective professional learning experiences that lead to enhanced instructional practices and improved student learning outcomes.
- Develop guidelines for implementing the five crucial levels of professional development evaluation, plan procedures for gathering meaningful and appropriate information at each level, and explore techniques for communicating that information to different stakeholders.

Included in this institute are suggestions for using this approach in daily classroom practice, advice on lesson planning for cognitive engagement, and guidelines for conducting reflective research so students can become their own teachers when dealing with unfamiliar information.
