Social-emotional learning helps students:
Integrating a focus on social-emotional learning into your classroom or school also will help you to better serve young people who have experienced trauma.
According to research by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, social-emotional learning helps young people to be "twice as likely to attain a college degree in early adulthood; 54% more likely to earn a high school diploma; and 46% more likely to have a full-time job at the age of 25."*
*Research from "Early Social-Emotional Functioning and Public Health: The Relationship Between Kindergarten Social Competence and Future Wellness," published on October 09, 2015, in American Journal of Public Health.
The need for social-emotional learning is clear. The U.S. Department of Education recently announced its budget, which includes a $1.3 billion increase in education funding, and sets aside dedicated funds for education initiatives that support social-emotional learning programs (Washington Post, December 19, 2019).

Administrators went on a journey of exploration, going into schools, talking to teachers, and shadowing students to find out what was missing. They discovered that the learning environment and curriculum needs to be engaging, rigorous, collaborative, creative, and foster critical thinking. The result of their work? A total redesign. In this video, we focus on the key pillars of the redesign and visit four pilot schools.

Teach to Lead brings teacher-led teams together to collaborate and incubate innovative ideas that can make a positive impact for students in their schools, communities, districts and states. The teacher leadership initiative helps teachers transform great ideas into action and take projects to scale.
Teach to Lead is the perfect opportunity to address the needs of the Whole Child, transitioning from a focus on narrowly defined academic achievement to one that promotes the long-term development and success and social-emotional well-being of both students and teachers. Examples of project topic ideas might include student and teacher well-being and mental health, bullying and harassment, student identity, trauma informed practices, school culture and climate, adult-student relationships.
Past participants state that "Having an opportunity to pull away from the pressures of life in our professional environments and spend time with others thinking purposefully about ONE specific problem gave me hope that a solution can be designed!" Follow Teach to Lead on Twitter for updates on the #TTLNetwork and upcoming events.
