ALEXANDRIA, VA—ASCD is excited to announce ASCD Empower17: The Conference for Every Educator, the mission-driven nonprofit’s 72nd annual conference and exhibit show. ASCD Empower17 will take place March 25–27, 2017, in Anaheim, Calif., and will empower educators—teachers, teacher leaders, principals, central office staff, and superintendents—to create their own personalized professional learning experiences.
Why Did ASCD Reinvent Its Conference Experience?
In a new Medium post, ASCD CEO and Executive Director Deb Delisle explains the genesis of ASCD Empower17:
“Pedagogy continues to evolve, methods improve, and educators across the world are improving instruction,” Delisle writes in the post. “Yet, at nearly every conference for educators, including ASCD’s annual conference, instruction and content delivery remains relatively static. After leaving last year’s conference, our team returned with a new recognition that, as educators, we aren’t practicing what we preach.”
Educators need professional learning that's as innovative and effective as the instruction they deliver to their students. Attendees at ASCD Empower17 can create a learning path to help organize sessions around six areas of focus, and customized based on the attendee’s role in education and level of experience.
In addition to familiar keynote luncheons and learning sessions, ASCD Empower17 will offer
The conference will also offer Reflection Pools, which are dedicated times and locations teams to share new ideas and collaborate together. Reflection Pools are comfortable spaces designed to facilitate group interaction and innovative thinking.
On-site EdCamps and expert coaching will help teams harness their best thinking and generate actionable plans to implement at home. Because students are at the core of our work, ASCD Empower17 will also incorporate student voices, local school visits, and attendees who will become the next generation of educators.
