Targeted ASCD Books, Institutes Released to Strengthen Common Core Implementation Nationwide

Alexandria, VA (01/15/13)—ASCD is pleased to announce the release of four new grade-level and subject-specific books in the Understanding the Common Core Standards series. Written by the experts at McREL and edited by a leading authority in standards implementation, John Kendall, these quick-start guides are now available in paperback and e-book formats.

This seven-part series is designed to help school leaders and staffs translate Common Core State Standards into coherent, content-rich curriculum and effective, classroom-level lessons. Launched with Understanding Common Core State Standards in 2011, the series now includes the following new titles:

Two more books, Common Core Standards for Elementary Grades K–2 Math and English Language Arts and Common Core Standards for Elementary Grades 3–5 Math and English Language Arts, will be released in spring 2013.

ASCD is also offering two-day leadership institutes to superintendents, principals, and other administrators spearheading schoolwide and districtwide efforts to implement the standards. Entitled "Lead the Change to Common Core State Standards: Essential Tools for School and District Leaders," the workshops will run

Each institute will be hosted by a nationally recognized education expert—Judy Carr will lead the institute in North Carolina and Sue Beers will take on the institute in California. Carr, an ASCD author, has extensive experience working with schools, districts, state agencies, and education organizations on a variety of professional development and curriculum projects. Beers, also an ASCD author, has worked with the Council of Chief State School Officers and other organizations nationwide to assist educators with the implementation of the Common Core State Standards.
