The Essential Ed-Tech Guide to Flipping Any Classroom Now Available from ASCD and ISTE
Alexandria, VA (06/07/12)—ASCD and ISTE are pleased to announce the release of Flip Your Classroom: Reach Every Student in Every Class Every Day. Authored by pioneering educators Jonathan Bergmann and Aaron Sams, and copublished by ASCD and ISTE, this practical guidebook introduces readers to the "how-to" and "why" behind the flipped-classroom approach.
"ISTE is pleased to collaborate with ASCD to bring this important new book to educators," said ISTE CEO Don G. Knezek. "Both organizations are dedicated to helping educators build constructive learning environments, and we believe this publication will empower educators to create positive, meaningful learning experiences that all students deserve."
Flip Your Classroom first explains the birth of Bergmann and Sams’s own flipped high school chemistry classroom, which evolved out of a simple question: What if lectures were presented in video as homework and class time was spent helping students understand the content? The book follows Bergmann and Sams as they do just that and find that their students are demonstrating a deeper understanding of the material than ever before.
This book, intentionally brief so it can be easily read and absorbed over the course of a night or weekend, offers educators and administrators an overview of both the flipped classroom and the flipped-mastery classroom. Flip Your Classroom presents an approach where work traditionally done in class is now done at home, and assignments traditionally done at home are now completed in class. It also explores how the flipped-classroom concept can be coupled with a mastery-learning environment to enable students to learn content at their own pace.
Additionally, Flip Your Classroom explains the logistics of bringing your own flipped classroom to life. Readers will learn how to create their own videos, from recording to publishing, and gain an understanding of how to develop videos that students will love.
By combining rich anecdotes of real teachers sharing their flipped-classroom experiences with Bergmann and Sams’s own insight, this book makes the flipped-classroom approach "reproducible, scalable, customizable and easy for teachers to wrap their minds around."
"This resource is a crucial read for educators ready to bring personalized learning to life with the help of technology," said ASCD CEO and Executive Director Gene R. Carter. "We’re very pleased to have partnered with ISTE, a powerful advocate for the success of students and educators around the world, on this effort."
Bergmann and Sams are recipients of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching. They refined their flipped-classroom approach while teaching chemistry and other sciences at Woodland Park High School in Colorado.
ASCD and ISTE encourage educators who are interested in learning more about the concepts in this book to attend two free Flip Your Classroom webinars hosted by Bergmann and Sams. The first webinar will be held on June 12 at 3:00 p.m. eastern time and will explore techniques of the flipped classroom. Part two, scheduled for September 12 at 3:00 p.m. eastern time, will delve into the flipped-mastery learning model.
