ALEXANDRIA, VA—ASCD, a community dedicated to excellence in learning, teaching, and leading, is pleased to announce that Benjamin Shuldiner, the distinguished lecturer of education leadership at Hunter College, City University of New York, has been elected as the association's new President. ASCD has also announced that Lorraine Ringrose, the retired principal of Patricia Heights Elementary School in Vernon, British Columbia, Canada, is the newly elected Vice President. Shuldiner and Ringrose each began one-year terms on July 1.
"I am honored and privileged to have been selected by my fellow board members to serve as President of ASCD. Throughout my education career, from teacher to principal to professor, ASCD has supported my educational growth and development. I know firsthand how invaluable ASCD's entire wealth of offerings, from programs to products to services, can be to educators throughout their career trajectories," Shuldiner said. "I look forward to working with the ASCD board, Executive Director and CEO Deb Delisle, and the entire ASCD team and membership as we continuously strive for the betterment of educators and our students."
Shuldiner has worked in the field of education for more than 15 years as a teacher, principal, and professor. He is the founder and former principal of the High School for Public Service (HSPS) in Brooklyn, New York, which was named one of the top 50 high schools in New York City by the Daily News and received a Bronze Medal from US News and World Report. In 2010, HSPS was named the top Title I school in New York, marking the first time a high school had won the award. In 2005, Shuldiner received the prestigious Jefferson Award for Public Service for an Individual 35 Years of Age and Under, and in 2011 he was the ASCD Outstanding Young Educator Award honoree.
Shuldiner has served in many leadership roles, including as president of the New York City Principals Association in 2009 and an executive board member for the association from 2008 to 2012. He has also been a member of the ASCD Position Advisory Committee since 2012, the ASCD Legislative Committee since 2013, and ASCD’s Professional Learning Services Faculty since 2014.
"Ben Shuldiner has a powerful track record of advocating for kids," said Deb Delisle, ASCD Executive Director and CEO. "I’m excited to work closely with him this year as we continue our efforts to expand ASCD’s reach and further our mission to empower educators across the globe to have the greatest impact on children."
Joining the elected leaders are the following new members of the Board of Directors, who began four-year terms on July 1:
