Jay McTighe to Lead ASCD Global Institutes on Understanding by Design® in Bangkok

Alexandria, VA (10/29/2013)—ASCD has announced two new global institutes on how to use Understanding by Design® to reach crucial learning goals. The institutes will be held in Bangkok, Thailand, the first on January 28–29, 2014, and the second on January 30, 2014.

Jay McTighe, cocreator of the UbD® framework and renowned education author, will lead both institutes. Experienced education consultant Elizabeth Rossini will also present at the two-day institute.

  • Understanding by Design® 2.0: Designing Understanding-Based Curriculum (January 28–29, 2014): During this two-day professional learning institute, presenters Jay McTighe and Elizabeth Rossini will guide educators of all levels through using UbD to help students understand content and apply learning in meaningful ways. Attendees will learn how to use the latest version of the framework to create highly rigorous and engaging curriculum and create or refine units of study using new tools and strategies.
  • Creating a Curriculum and Assessment System for 21st Century Learning (January 30, 2014): During this intensive one-day institute, presenter Jay McTighe will teach groups of school leaders, curriculum coordinators, teacher leaders, and school trustees how to apply UbD principles and practices to meet 21st century learning targets. Attendees will explore how to integrate 21st century skills with established standards, apply backward design to curriculum mapping, and assess 21st century skills in conjunction with academic standards.

The UbD framework offers a planning process and structure to guide curriculum, assessment, and instruction. It presents a three-stage backward design process for curriculum planning and includes a template and set of design tools that embody the process.

"It is with great enthusiasm that we make these expert-led global institutes available to educators," said ASCD CEO and Executive Director Dr. Gene R. Carter. "We encourage educators around the globe to take advantage of this high-impact and rigorous professional growth opportunity."
