Alexandria, VA (09/14/11)—ASCD, the global leader in providing programs, products, and services that empower educators to support the success of each learner, announces the addition of Efrain Mercado Jr. and Katie Hill to its public policy team. Mercado and Hill will support the association’s common core initiative to advance understanding and implementation of the common core state standards in targeted states and districts nationwide, and will be based in the association’s Alexandria, Va., headquarters.
Efrain Mercado Jr. joins ASCD as lead strategist for the common core state standards. In his new role, Mercado is tasked with increasing awareness of the standards among school leaders and educators. In addition, he will engage with states and districts in identifying, developing, and disseminating resources educators can use to implement the standards in their classrooms.
Most recently, Mercado served as the director of outreach for the National Center for Educational Achievement (a department of ACT, Inc.), where he worked with state education agencies and school districts to promote and advocate for the use of best practices to achieve college and career readiness.
Katie Hill joins ASCD as manager of common core state standards. Hill will coordinate efforts to publicize the standards among educators and will support Common Core State Standards implementation strategies. Just prior to joining ASCD, Hill served in the District of Columbia Public Schools system as a professional development specialist promoting job-embedded professional development through ongoing support and guidance of instructional coaches.
In March, ASCD was awarded $3 million by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to support implementation of common core state standards over a three-year period. ASCD’s efforts will include a series of summits supporting the transition to the new common core standards in selected states. These meetings will disseminate information about the new standards as well as gather feedback from educators about what they need to help bring the standards to life through effective classroom instruction.
Based on the feedback from these meetings, ASCD will create and distribute teaching and learning tools and professional development resources that support educators’ integration of the standards into classroom instruction and ensure their understanding of the standards’ underlying concepts.
"We are thrilled to welcome education experts of this caliber to the team," commented ASCD Director of Public Policy David Griffith. "Both Efrain and Katie share ASCD’s vision for supporting the success of each learner and have the experience and expertise to translate that vision into effective programs that support educators."
