Alexandria, VA (7/16/2015)—ASCD has released the following statement from Public Policy Director David Griffith in response to the U.S. Senate passing the Every Child Achieves Act (S.1177) today:
ASCD applauds the Senate for passing a K–12 education bill to replace the No Child Left Behind Act. The legislation, the Every Child Achieves Act (S.1177), strikes a careful compromise that requires states to establish rigorous school accountability systems for student achievement that include more measures than the current law requires, while also offering local flexibility in designing and delivering the extra support the lowest-performing schools need to help students.
We commend Chairman Lamar Alexander and Senator Patty Murray for tirelessly working together to produce a bill that has garnered such bipartisan support. We look forward to working with Senate and House members during the upcoming conference committee as they produce a final bill that addresses the challenges faced by schools today and supports the daily efforts of students and educators around the country.
