ASCD Appoints Gregory Smith as Chief Technology Officer
Alexandria, VA (06/25/13)—ASCD, the global leader in providing programs, products, and services that empower educators to support the success of each learner, has appointed Gregory Smith as the association’s new chief technology officer (CTO). In his new role, Smith will lead and direct the association’s technological planning and development. Smith will be ASCD’s first-ever CTO, a position created by the ASCD leadership team to enable the association to expand innovation opportunities with current and emerging technology.
“ASCD is committed to delivering high-quality professional development to educators using the latest innovations in digital and mobile technology,” said ASCD Executive Director and CEO Dr. Gene R. Carter. “The appointment of a chief technology officer only reinforces ASCD’s commitment to enhancing and embracing technology as the underpinning of content delivery for educators.”
Among the many responsibilities of his new role, Smith will identify opportunities for delivering innovative technology solutions. He will direct the planning and implementation of enterprise information technology systems by leveraging strategic partnerships and innovating approaches to technology delivery. Smith will also be tasked with streamlining operations and services to implement robust and scalable processes and technologies to increase productivity.
“I’ve spent 26 years honing my technology skills and more than 15 years as an adjunct professor at one of America’s top universities. I am both an educator and an IT executive,” said Smith. “ASCD will give me the opportunity to combine my two passions—education and technical excellence. My goal is to continue to grow ASCD’s IT capabilities in order to remain a world-class provider of education resources.”
Smith brings more than 25 years’ experience in the education, digital media, and technology markets to ASCD. Before joining the association, he was a senior advisor to chief information officers (CIOs) as part of the elite CIO Leadership Group at Forrester Research. Prior to his role with Forrester, Smith served as the chief information officer at Pew Charitable Trusts, where he directed Pew’s IT global strategy and served as the IT and technical lead at Pew. He also served as vice president and chief information officer at World Wildlife Fund in Washington, D.C., for a decade, guiding the environmental firm with strategic and tactical technical leadership.
Smith received an undergraduate degree in computer science from the University of Maryland, College Park, and a master's degree in business from the Johns Hopkins University, where he served as an adjunct professor in the Carey Business School graduate programs.
