ASCD Multimedia in the Spotlight After Film Awards
Alexandria, VA (07/07/09)—Two ASCD videos took home prizes at the 30th Annual Telly Awards and at the U.S. International Film and Video Festival last month. The winning videos focus on hot topics in education: 21st century skills and Robert Marzano’s Art and Science of Teaching instructional framework.
ASCD’s best-selling DVD 21st Century Skills: Promoting Creativity and Innovation in the Classroom was among the 14,000 Telly Award worldwide entries. The video won bronze Tellys in the training and education categories and also received third-place honors for creativity at the U.S. International Film and Video Festival. The series The Art and Science of Teaching: A Framework for Effective Instruction also won a bronze Telly in the education category.
ASCD recently redesigned its educational videos to adapt to current professional development styles and format. "Our new video format presents content in 'YouTube length'—sections of 5- to 10-minute vignettes," said Tim Register, ASCD's director of multimedia. "We want video just long enough to transmit the information and engage the participants without overloading them."
Each DVD's menu structure allows a tailored viewing experience based on various audience needs. Particular video segments can be watched individually or in succession. Facilitators have access to a professional development guide embedded on the disc, which includes activities, handouts, a PowerPoint presentation, and a step-by-step plan to keep the learning session flowing and elicit active participation.
"ASCD multimedia was redesigned to be more interactive and accessible," said Register. "Our creative team believes that videos complemented with the suggested professional development guides ensure dynamic, high-quality PD for facilitators and audiences."
In addition to partnering with several districts to implement streaming video programs in schools, ASCD is also working with Brightcove Studio to offer the finest in Web video. Watch trailers from the award-winning videos:
