Valerie Truesdale to Lead ASCD
Valerie Page Truesdale took office as ASCD's new president at the end of the closing general session of the 2008 Annual Conference and Exhibit Show in New Orleans, La. Truesdale is superintendent of the Beaufort County School District in Beaufort, S.C., which has a vision to collaborate with an engaged community to provide all learners an excellent education in a safe, nurturing learning environment. That vision aligns with ASCD's whole child initiative. Truesdale also supports ASCD's focus on learning beyond geographic boundaries.

New York Students Demonstrate Civics Education Acumen
On March 6, 2008, more than 100 local high school students deliberated and argued cases involving the First Amendment in public schools, by playing true-to-life legal roles in front of two federal judges in two courtrooms at the Alfonse M. D'Amato United States Courthouse in Central Islip, N.Y. The students were expected to demonstrate their knowledge of history, civics, and democracy when they argued landmark U.S. Supreme Court cases before the judges.

ASCD Selects Hoboken, N.J., Middle School Teacher as 2008 Outstanding Young Educator
Deirdra Grode, a 7th and 8th grade social studies and language arts teacher at Hoboken Charter School in Hoboken, N.J., is the winner of ASCD's 2008 Outstanding Young Educator Award (OYEA). ASCD honored Grode on March 15, 2008, at its Annual Conference and Exhibit Show in New Orleans, La. Grode says she expects her students to "view the world with critical minds and be leaders of positive change in their communities."
