Differentiating Instruction for All English Learners
July 13, 2011 | New York, N.Y.
This institute focuses on the use of differentiated and other instructional approaches and strategies that support language development and academic achievement of all students, including English learners who are new to the country and have interrupted formal schooling, as well as long-term English learning bilingual students—those who 'know' English, but who struggle academically. In both cases, it is recognized that students have background knowledge, including linguistic and cultural resources, that facilitate and promote the learning of academic English.
Participants will
- Participate in activities that demonstrate the value of linking to what is known linguistically and culturally to promote new learning;
- Explore and practice strategies that allow all students to access standards-based core curriculum in meaningful ways that are culturally responsive and promote academic English across proficiencies; and
- Design a challenging, engaging, relevant, authentic, collaborative learning project that incorporates global competencies, allows for learning differences, and promotes deep learning and language development.
