Building Academic Language and Literacies for English Language Learners
July 14, 2011 | New York, N.Y.
This institute focuses on the ways in which ESL and mainstream teachers can develop the academic language and literacies needed for success in language arts, social studies, math, and science. Using a task analysis approach, the presenter helps participants identify the text features of everyday classroom tasks in order to understand the exact language students need for successful participation. Specific strategies for explicit instruction of language features while teaching content are modeled and practiced.
Participants will know and be able to
- Identify the language genres of their academic disciplines;
- Analyze the language features of required formative and summative assessments; and
- Target instructional strategies accordingly (for example, reading comprehension, writing, and oral communication).
