ASCD Institutes

A New Solution for Professional Learning

Our new connected event model allows you to experience the same high-quality professional learning whether you are at the central location or a networked location. Either way, you will hear the same presentation and be able to interact with learners at the other locations.

The central location features an in-person presentation by the main expert.

Networked locations will receive a synchronized broadcast of the central location presentation and have access to a facilitator that is a trained member of the main experts' team.

Introducing ASCD's Live, Networked Professional Learning Institutes

ASCD Professional Learning Institutes are a regionally networked solution, synchronously led by prominent authors and experts across an exciting, live interconnected community of your colleagues.

Professional Learning Institutes (PLI) feature

  • Top-quality, trained subject-matter experts and their teams
  • Technology driven, interactive experience between connected locations
  • Powerful team-building in energetic learning communities.

At our central location, you interact directly with the main experts, while our networked locations are led by seasoned and trained members of the main experts’ personal team and feature innovative technology that allows for interaction with all locations via in-person breakout sessions, online tools, and resources.

Choose the location and experience that works best for you.

Regardless of which location you choose, you will be part of a new, dynamic experience that thrives on both in-person and cross-location collaboration in an exciting community of learners.

Disrupting Poverty:
Where to Start, What to Stop

Presented by William Parrett and Kathleen Budge

February 2–3, 2016

  • Central Location: Independence, Ohio
  • Networked Locations: Columbus, Sharonville, and Massillon, Ohio

What does it take to disrupt poverty's adverse influence on student learning?

It requires far more than individual teachers' diligent and often heroic efforts. Even when successful, these endeavors are rarely replicated or sustained without far broader and deeper collective action.

Based on their award-winning ASCD book, Turning High-Poverty Schools into High-Performing Schools, the authors will provide participants with a framework for collaborative action.

You will gain insight into where to start—and equally important, what to stop—to disrupt the adverse influence of poverty. Practical strategies and concrete examples are provided to "jumpstart" participants' thinking about what it often takes to create a learning environment where all students succeed.

  • Emerge with enhanced understanding of what works for underachieving students living in poverty.
  • Understand how high poverty schools become high performing.
  • Be compelled to take informed action to better meet the needs of underachieving student living in poverty.
