Marzano is cofounder and CEO of Marzano Research Laboratory in Centennial, Colo., and a former senior scholar at Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning in Aurora, Colo. He has developed programs and practices used in K–12 classrooms that translate current research and theory in cognition into instructional methods.
An internationally known trainer and speaker, Marzano has authored 30 books and more than 150 articles and chapters in books on such topics as reading and writing instruction, thinking skills, school effectiveness, restructuring, assessment, cognition, and standards implementation. Recent titles include The Art and Science of Teaching: A Comprehensive Framework for Effective Instruction (ASCD, 2007); Classroom Instruction That Works: Research-Based Strategies for Increasing Student Achievement (ASCD, 2001); Classroom Management That Works: Research-Based Strategies for Every Teacher (ASCD, 2003); What Works in Schools: Translating Research into Action (ASCD, 2003); Building Background Knowledge for Academic Achievement: Research on What Works in Schools (ASCD, 2004); Building Academic Vocabulary (ASCD, 2005); School Leadership That Works (ASCD, 2005); Classroom Assessment and Grading That Work (ASCD, 2006); and The New Taxonomy of Educational Objectives (Corwin, 2007).
Marzano received a bachelor's degree in English from Iona College in New York, a master's degree in education in reading/language arts from Seattle University, and a doctorate in curriculum and instruction from the University of Washington.
