Veronica McDermott, PhD, believes that deep learning and inspired teaching are wondrous acts of transcendent hope that should belong to every child and every teacher. Further, she believes that educators, families and students possess untapped resources to transform underperforming schools into oases of success.
The public schools of Long Island, N.Y., served as the launching pad of McDermott’s career, which has spanned more than 30 years and extended over many roles: superintendent of schools, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, principal, district director, dean, and teacher. Her interests in curriculum, instruction, and assessment provided her with opportunities to consult, teach, present and write for numerous districts, colleges and universities, national and international organizations, and national and local publications. She continues to focus her efforts on school transformation, social justice, and equity through her work as regional director with the National Urban Alliance for Effective Education. She is a frequent contributor and faculty member at conferences and workshops dedicated to the role of leaders and leadership teams in school transformation.
McDermott received her BA and MA in English from SUNY Stony Brook. She earned a professional diploma in administration from Long Island University and completed her doctoral work at New York University.
