Areas of Expertise
Andrew Miller is an instructional coach at the Shanghai American School in Shanghai, China, where he supports professional learning communities in implementing standards-based curricula. His career in education spans many years and a variety of roles, from classroom teacher to instructional coach to education consultant.
As a teacher and instructional coach, he has worked in a range of contexts, including a comprehensive high school and a STEM PBL school, both in Washington State.
He designed and implemented PBL projects in a 1:1 environment where he aligned technology to instructional practices in assessment, STEM, and 21st century skills. Next, he served as a literacy coach to support English language learners and literacy across the curriculum. He then moved into a virtual teaching role where he leveraged blended learning best practices to engage students.
As an education consultant and expert facilitator of personalized, authentic professional learning, Miller has worked with teachers in the United States, Canada, China, Kuwait, Japan, Australia, India, and the Dominican Republic. He has supported schools and districts in both short- and long-term implementation of programs focused on project-based learning (PBL), FIT Teaching, assessment, and student engagement. He also presents regularly at conferences hosted by ASCD and other organizations.
Miller is an avid blogger and writer for a variety of organizations on the topics of student engagement, assessment, PBL, and school culture. His writing is both practical and provocative and can be read regularly at ASCD and Edutopia. He is also the author of the ASCD’s Arias Freedom to Fail: How do I foster risk-taking and innovation in my classroom?
He received his master's degree in teaching and his bachelor's degree in classics from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. He is a member of ASCD's FIT Teaching Cadre.
