Nanci Smith, a member of ASCD's Differentiated Instruction Cadre, has been a full-time consultant in the areas of differentiated instruction, curriculum, Common Core State Standards, and mathematics for more than 10 years. She facilitates professional learning nationally and internationally in her areas of expertise in large and small, urban, rural, and suburban schools and districts.
Smith has provided professional learning in 45 states and 9 countries, including schools in the Netherlands, Dutch West Indies, Venezuela, Singapore, and Japan. She has presented at conferences and institutes in Southeast Asia, Europe, and the Middle East, and has helped develop high-quality curriculum in the Philippines. In addition to providing professional learning, Smith has conducted mathematics programs and curriculum audits for several districts across the country. Her current efforts concentrate on the realistic implementation and implications of the Common Core State Standards. Her focus in this area includes in-depth, ongoing work with individual districts as well as shorter conferences and presentations.
Her continuing work with districts and schools includes developing a detailed and cohesive kindergarten through high school Algebra 2 curriculum with pre-assessment, formative assessment, and summative assessment items (performance- and paper-based) as well as specific instructional strategies and engagement activities aligned with CCSS-M. Smith also works with districts in planning for standards implementation and by designing and delivering professional development for administrators and teachers. She taught math at the high school and university level and fully implemented differentiated instruction in her classroom prior to becoming a full-time consultant. She taught a differentiated instruction masters course for Arizona State University and Northern Arizona University and for teachers at the Singapore American International School through Buffalo State University.
Smith is the math consultant and author of the user’s guide for ASCD’s Meaningful Math: Leading Students Toward Understanding and Application DVD series and has developed a CD/DVD-based professional development series for middle school math teachers. Her classroom was featured in ASCD’s video series At Work in the Differentiated Classroom. She authored a chapter in the ASCD book Differentiation in Practice, Grades 5–9, as well as assorted lessons in other ASCD books on differentiation.
Smith received her doctorate in curriculum and instruction, mathematics education from Arizona State University. She also holds a master's degree in curriculum and instruction and a bachelor's degree in mathematics. She is National Board–certified in adolescent and young adult mathematics.
