In this webinar, Jay McTighe and Judy Willis examine how the neuroscience of learning intersects with the Understanding by Design® framework. Using ideas outlined in their new book, Upgrade Your Teaching: Understanding by Design Meets Neuroscience, they will explore

  • What the brain needs in order to maximize learning that lasts;
  • The different education goals of modern learning and their implications for teaching and assessment;
  • The neuroscience behind developing and deepening students' understanding; and
  • Specific teaching techniques for hooking and holding students' attention, constructing long-term conceptual memory, and developing learners' executive functions.

About the Presenters

Jay McTigheJay McTighe served as director of the Maryland Assessment Consortium, a state collaboration of school districts working together to develop and share formative performance assessments. Prior to this position, he was involved with school improvement projects at the Maryland State Department of Education where he directed the development of the instructional framework, a multimedia database on teaching.

JUDY WILLISJudy Willis is a board-certified neurologist and middle school teacher in Santa Barbara, Calif., has combined her training in neuroscience and neuroimaging with her teacher education training and years of classroom experience. She has become an authority in the field of learning-centered brain research and classroom strategies derived from this research.
