Literacy and Numeracy: Designing Instruction to Improve Student Performance in the K–6 Classroom
July 26–29, 2009 | Washington, D.C.
Academy Handout Information
What does it mean to be literate? Is decoding enough? Are numbers involved? Bring a team from your school or district to the ASCD Summer Academy on Literacy and Numeracy to get the answers to these and other questions. Learn why literacy is about not only recognizing words and numbers but also understanding what the words and numbers mean.
Explore engaging instructional activities that help students build personal understanding, connect with texts, and become literate in the field of numbers. Gain a toolbox of research-based, proven practices, including
- Eight strategies to help students learn and comprehend in any subject area.
- Ways to discern and address the differing needs of students.
- Activities that increase student comprehension.
- Kid-tested, hands-on activities that help students retain what they have learned.
The last day of the academy will be focused on developing lessons and unit plans to implement in your classrooms.
