Dedication

Marc Stein paced while he listened to us express what we wanted to accomplish and contribute through this book. After each of us had spoken, Marc said, “So what you're actually proposing is an approach to transforming the normative structure of the school, so everyone learns and stays safe.” In that one sentence, Marc articulated our shared purpose. He used his imagination, intellect, and heart to find a shared framework for our individual contributions. Just one month later, on the day our proposal for this book was complete, Marc Stein's gentle heart stopped beating. In the first stunned and grief-filled weeks, Marc was mourned within and well beyond our small group. The loss of this well-loved husband, father, brother, lifelong friend, esteemed colleague, and new coauthor remains palpable. Marc's presence as an irrepressible, deeply respected member of our team is felt on each page. We dedicate this book and our work to his life and his memory.
