Students across the country confront Design Challenge No. 1 posed by “Spaceday 2002 Adventure to Mars” (www.spaceday.com): “Invent a device that will make living or working on Mars easier.” This challenge results from the discovery that “unknown contaminants have polluted the water supply on the International Space Station.”
