Many years ago I was conducting qualitative research on high school students' imaginative thinking (Barell, 1980). This study provided me with opportunities to sit in classrooms and observe their behavior. The students had no idea what I was looking for so I could follow up my observations with a wide variety of questions to attempt to understand what they were thinking about during classes.
