Voice of Inclusion: Keepers of the Dream

by Deborah Tweit-Hull

Kelvin entered O'Farrell Community School in the 7th grade. He had recently been released from a 24-hour residential facility for students with emotional disabilities. Because O'Farrell had no special education classes, Kelvin went from an extremely restrictive residential setting to a general education setting overnight. Mr. Evans, the special education teacher who supported Kelvin and the other students eligible for special education in Educational Family VI (the school is organized into six families that function as smaller schools within the school) described Kelvin as “a highly intelligent yet troubled child with a short fuse.” When the school year started, Kelvin was involved in daily altercations (usually fights) with other students. If he wasn't fighting, he usually had a hand in orchestrating the resulting turmoil!
