Karen Tankersley, a 28-year veteran of public school service, resides in Phoenix, Arizona. Karen left public service in May 2004 and currently works with school districts across the United States on school improvement and professional development activities. A resident of Arizona since her early teen years, Karen likes the desert and the Southwest lifestyle. She enjoys travel, swimming, reading, and spending time with her two young granddaughters.
Originally a linguist with a Bachelor of Arts degree in French and minors in German and English, Karen spent several years living in Europe and serving as a translator of German documents. She has an extensive background in language and language acquisition issues, holds a Master of Arts in Reading and a Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from Arizona State University.
Karen has teaching experience at all grades from 2 to 12 and also at the university level. In her early career, she spent 10 years in various roles as a classroom teacher, foreign language teacher, reading specialist, and teacher of the gifted and talented. She served for 13 years as a principal in schools recognized nationally for their outstanding achievement and high academic performance. Karen spent five years at the district office level where she served at the superintendent level and oversaw the Educational Services and Assessment efforts of a growing, suburban school district. She currently is employed as a clinical professor at Arizona State University, West Campus, in Phoenix.
Karen enjoys writing and has published articles in several educational journals including Educational Leadership. She is the author of The Threads of Reading: Strategies for Literacy Development (ASCD, 2003) and Literacy Strategies for Grades 4–12: Reinforcing the Threads of Reading (ASCD, 2005) on effective strategies for reading instruction.
