About the Author

Susan M. Brookhart is an independent educational consultant based in Helena, Montana. She works with ASCD as an ASCD Faculty Member, providing on-site professional development in formative assessment. She has taught both elementary and middle school. She was Professor and Chair of the Department of Educational Foundations and Leadership at Duquesne University, where she currently serves as Senior Research Associate in the Center for Advancing the Study of Teaching and Learning. She serves on the state assessment advisory committees for Montana and Nebraska. She has been the Education columnist for National Forum, the journal of Phi Kappa Phi. She is the 2007–2009 editor of Educational Measurement: Issues and Practice, a journal of the National Council on Measurement in Education. She is author of The Art and Science of Classroom Assessment and Grading and Formative Assessment Strategies for Every Classroom (an ASCD Action Tool). She is coauthor of Assessment and Grading in Classrooms and Educational Assessment of Students (5th ed.). She has written or coauthored more than 40 articles on classroom assessment, teacher professional development, and evaluation and serves on the editorial boards of several journals. She received her Ph.D. in Educational Research and Evaluation from The Ohio State University.
