About the Authors

Richard L. Curwin, Ph.D., is an author, speaker, and experienced practitioner who explores issues of student discipline, behavioral management, and motivation. Having served as a 7th grade educator, teacher of emotionally disturbed children, and college professor, Dr. Curwin has a breadth of experience in the classroom. The behavior management strategies and philosophies he shares with educators have worked for him. Dr. Curwin and his colleague Dr. Allen N. Mendler founded Discipline Associates and created the Discipline with Dignity program. Dr. Curwin coauthored Discipline with Dignity for Challenging Youth and As Tough as Necessary: Countering Violence, Aggression, and Hostility in Our Schools. He is also the author of Making Good Choices and Motivating Students Left Behind. Dr. Curwin's latest video set, The Four Keys to Effective Classroom and Behavior Management, which he developed with Dr. Mendler and Brian Mendler, won the 2007 Association of Educational Publishers Distinguished Achievement Award in School/Class Management-Technology.

Allen N. Mendler, Ph.D., is an educator and school psychologist who has worked extensively with children of all ages in regular education and special education settings. Dr. Mendler's emphasis is on developing effective frameworks and strategies for educators, youth professionals, and parents to help difficult youth succeed. He has written a number of books, including Motivating Students Who Don't Care, Connecting with Students, What Do I Do When, Power Struggles: Successful Techniques for Educators, and Handling Difficult Parents. He recently co-authored Strategies for Successful Classroom Management. Dr. Mendler was the recipient of The Spirit of Crazy Horse Award in recognition of his lifelong contribution to improving the lives of challenging youth.

Brian D. Mendler is a recognized authority on behavior and classroom management. The strategies he shares with K–12 teachers and administrators are the same ones he uses in his own classrooms with great success. Brian is a certified elementary and special education teacher with extensive experience working with challenging students in general education, self-contained, and inclusion classrooms. He continues to be a highly sought after consultant and has worked extensively throughout the United States, Canada, and England. Brian is also an adjunct professor at St. John Fisher College in Rochester, N.Y., where he teaches Behavior Management. Brian continues to volunteer in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program and with the Special Olympics.
