In addition to practicing the principles as a way of moving toward increased mastery in your own teaching practice, you can also use the principles as a way of diagnosing your instructional challenges.
Here is the way it works. The next time you are facing a challenge in your classroom, first describe the challenge as clearly as possible. Then, use the problem-solving sheet on the next page to figure out which principle is most relevant to your current challenge. Once you have identified the principle or principles that address your challenge, revisit the chapter that discusses the principle for ideas on how to use the principle to resolve your current challenge. Tool 7 will also help you figure out which principle may apply to your problem.
