This ASCD Study Guide is designed to enhance your understanding and application of the information contained in Read, Write, Lead: Breakthrough Strategies for Schoolwide Literacy Success, an ASCD book written by Regie Routman and published in June 2014.
You can use the study guide before or after you have read the book, or as you finish each chapter. The study questions provided are not meant to cover all aspects of the book, but, rather, to address specific ideas that might warrant further reflection.
Most of the questions contained in this study guide are ones you can think about on your own, but you might consider pairing with a colleague or forming a study group with others who have read (or are reading) Read, Write, Lead: Breakthrough Strategies for Schoolwide Literacy Success.
The purpose of this study guide is to deepen understanding and application of what you've read and thought about while reading the book. Use the questions to take a close look at literacy and leadership in your classroom, school, and district with the purpose of raising achievement for all learners—students, teachers, and leaders. Think about what's going well, what might need to change, and what you can do to bring about sustainable, worthwhile change that increases effectiveness, engagement, and enjoyment across the curriculum.
Although there are no "right" answers, talking with colleagues about ideas and issues connected with teaching, leading, assessing, and learning has the potential to stretch your thinking, raise new questions, increase understanding, and, perhaps, to help the group come to important consensus. High achievement is not likely to happen and/or be sustained without schoolwide commitment, alignment of beliefs and practices, and ongoing professional learning. I hope Read, Write, Lead and the accompanying study guide may be a catalyst for successful and lasting change in your classroom, school, and district.
