Use this questionnaire to gather information about students' questions and interests, and then use the information to plan standards-based units. Before asking students to complete the questionnaire, you might ask them to focus on themselves. You might say, “Begin thinking about yourself. What are your interests, problems, and needs? What questions do you have about your community? What questions do you have about your world?” Ask your students to jot down a few thoughts before giving them the questionnaire. You might want to model the types of questions you would like them to generate. For students in the primary grades, holding a class discussion in response to some of the open-ended questions on the questionnaire may be preferable to individual responses.
