What if every school in the United States could develop a simple program that would engage and motivate students, reinforce the work of teachers, increase achievement, and promote communication and social skills?

In the recent ASCD Express article "Peer Tutoring: What Can Be Done Tomorrow Morning in Every School," Syracuse University professor emeritus Gerald Grant strongly advocates for peer-tutoring programs.

    "the student acting as tutor has already attained greater mastery of the subject or material being taught, while the other student might be struggling. "
    This is often a really bad idea. The gifted kid who "gets it" doesn't get to learn anything new. Already derided as "petZ" or "smarty pants", s/he gets set up to be disdained even more as the "know it all" and is set up for failure by "teaching" the kid who can't seem to learn it even when instructed by a licensed, qualified teacher. Once or twice a year is fine, but please don't incorporate it as a regular practice.
    How about letting the student who knows the material the opportunity to advance her/his own learning instead of being used as a non-paid teacher's aide.
