During registration, participants choose Differentiated Instruction or Understanding by Design® as their area of interest (strand).
During the retreat, participants spend the first two days deeply focused on their area of interest, and then come together with all authors on the final half-day to learn how each of these areas work together.
Each strand was created by the instructor and includes extensive instructional and resource content, interactive assignments, direct access to the instructor, and practical application of strategies and resources.

Understanding by Design
Presented by Jay McTighe
How can you design learning experiences that make it much more likely that students will understand content and be able to apply it in meaningful ways?
About this Strand:
Thousands of educators globally have used the Understanding by Design (UbD)® Framework to answer that question and create more rigorous and engaging curricula. Workshop participants will apply a set of practical UbD 2.0 design tools and templates to create or refine curriculum units and maps. In addition, strategies and resources for leading and supporting UbD at the school or district levels will be presented.

Learning Outcomes:
Participants will learn to
Apply the 3-stage "backward design" model for the development of curriculum, assessment, and instruction.
Use essentials questions to frame curriculum with a focus on "big ideas."
Apply processes for "unpacking" Standards to establish curriculum priorities and determine content worthy of deep understanding.
Explore six "facets" of understanding and their implications for curriculum, assessment, and teaching.
Apply selected design tools to create authentic performance tasks.
Apply a set of proven instructional strategies and tools for actively engaging learners in meaning making.
Access a large collection of UbD-supportive web-based resources.
