When a student is dealing with trauma, it can manifest in many kinds of behaviors. How can a teacher identify these behaviors and understand what types of responses would be most helpful?
A visual reference guide, "Common Trauma Symptoms in Students and Helpful Strategies for Educators," developed by the Institute of Education Sciences' Regional Educational Laboratory Program, can serve as a resource and reminder for educators of how to respond to children facing trauma. This free PDF is packed with helpful information and strategies. It outlines different types of trauma signs students might exhibit—such as physical, social-emotional, and cognitive symptoms—and provides preventative, in-the-moment, and after-the-moment strategies for working with students, keeping classrooms safe, and avoiding unnecessary punitive measures.
Find the PDF and other free resources at the Regional Educational Laboratory Program's website.

EL’s experienced team of writers and editors produces Educational Leadership magazine, an award-winning publication that reaches hundreds of thousands of K-12 educators and leaders each year. Our work directly supports the mission of ASCD: To empower educators to achieve excellence in learning, teaching, and leading so that every child is healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged.
